Top UNESCO World Heritage Sites to Explore in the United States

There are about 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites in the United States all of which are located in different territories and states. Of these eleven are cultural, one is a mix, and twelve are natural sites with most of them being national parks.

Redwood National and State Park/ California



Redwood National and State Park are located along the coast of northern California, the park is covered with coast redwood trees the tallest and one of the most massive tree species on earth. The park also contains areas of pristine coastline which supports nesting and feeding areas for several species of migratory waterfowl.

Mammoth Cave National Park/ Kentucky



Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world. With over 390 miles of passageways, the cave system is home to more than 130 animal species.

Waterfront Glacier International Peace Park/ Alberta

Located along the border of two countries this region has a unique, distinctive climate and tri hydrographical divide.

Papahanaumokuakea/ Hawaii



The marine national monument encompasses 140000 square miles of ocean water, including ten islands’ atolls of the northwestern Hawaiin island making it the world's largest marine protected area. This area supports 7000 species one-quarter of which are endemic. The area is regarded with traditional significance for living native Hawaii and culture.

Mesa Verde National Park/ Montezuma County



The site contains several cliff dwellings constructed by the ancient Pueblo people between the 6th and 12th centuries at an altitude greater than 2600 meters. Some notable examples among the 600 dwellings include Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Square Tower House.

Yellowstone National Park/ Wyoming, Montana, Idaho

The park consists of almost 9000 sq km of natural forest. It contains half of the world's geothermal features including over 300 geysers and nearly 150 species have been discovered within the park.
